Biography

Myrtle Carden was a 17-year-old Stehli Silk worker in High Point, North Carolina, who had worked for the company for five years and earned about $4.50 weekly before the August–September 1932 strike. Lawrence Hogan reports that police clubbed, kicked and gassed her on the picket line, arrested her for inciting to riot and took her to jail, keeping her from her family for several hours. Her own account describes being carried to police headquarters; physician C. D. Thompson described serious injuries. No exact arrest day, conviction, sentence or final custody endpoint is printed.
