Biography
Mazen Al-Najjar, a Palestinian academic and former University of South Florida instructor, was held in immigration detention in 1997-2000 and again from November 24, 2001 until his deportation on August 22, 2002. The 2001-2002 custody episode was immigration detention, not a sentence in the later Tampa PIJ criminal case.

A 2004 law-review account distinguishes Al-Najjar’s earlier INS detention—three years seven months, ending in December 2000—from his later detention and August 2002 deportation. It says terrorism charges were never brought and describes use of undisclosed evidence in immigration proceedings. The earlier episode is recorded separately, without calculating an admission date.
