Biography
Maude Francis was a juvenile detained in connection with the New Haven Black Panther prosecution in 1969. The defense campaign challenged the treatment of the young defendants and efforts to compel their testimony.
The Black Panther, June 7, 1969: Printed page 8 individually names this defendant in the New Haven raid and prints captioned portraits of eight defendants. Theodore Spurlock reports the office and upstairs apartment entered at 1:05 Thursday morning, with breakfast-program money and other property taken, and initial murder/conspiracy accusations. The Black Panther’s December 20, 1969 account of the New Haven bail hearing ending December 5 identifies Maude Francis as a fifteen-year-old already detained under separate juvenile proceedings. It reports that Judge Aaron Palmer initially charged her with contempt when she refused to testify, then dropped that charge after her lawyer requested a jury and sent her back to jail until she agreed to testify. This is an attributed contemporary account of continued coercive detention, not a fixed sentence through age twenty-one or a verified release date.
