Biography

Mary McAllister was a proprietor of the Roderick Hotel in Centralia, Washington, with her husband J. C. McAllister. Ben Hur Lampman’s contemporary American Legion account, Centralia: Tragedy and Trial, identifies her by name while discussing the couple’s testimony supporting Eugene Barnett’s account of the November 11, 1919 Centralia violence. Despite its hostility toward the defense witnesses, the account explicitly reports her testimony that detention in jail following Armistice Day had harmed her health and spirits. It does not state her individual charge, custody duration, admission or discharge date. Those limits are preserved; no criminal conviction or political affiliation is inferred.
