Biography
Martin Chancey was a Cleveland translation-service owner who had been tried and convicted with five others under the Smith Act in 1956 (the conviction reversed and the charges dismissed in 1958). In 1961 he was again subpoenaed before the House Un-American Activities Committee, which retained his business records — pursuit his supporters said was wrecking his livelihood.
