Biography
Marius Mason is an environmental and animal rights activist. In 1999, while a member of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) he set fire to a lab at the Michigan State University that was conducting research on genetically modified organisms (GMO). Marius was threatened with a life sentence for the arson and other acts of sabotage. With little financial stability and fear of dragging his family into a costly legal battle, Marius pled guilty and was given an extreme sentence of nearly 22 years. No one was ever harmed in any of his actions.
Industrial Worker reports Mason’s initial arrest on March 10, 2008 and correctly identifies the targeted building as Agriculture Hall at Michigan State University. The official February 5, 2009 prosecution announcement confirms sentencing that day before Judge Paul L. Maloney and identifies prosecutor Hagen W. Frank. Separately, the court docket records conditional pretrial release proceedings and an executed September 30, 2008 re-arrest. The former single March 2008 admission and 6,639-day continuous-prison counter therefore cannot represent the full history. The first physical release day and complete jail intervals remain unresolved; the verified 2026 release date is preserved.

Fire to the Prisons reports the nominal sentence as 262 months. Its April 22, 2009 update places Marius Mason at FCI Waseca and describes kitchen work, access to the library and a guitar, and efforts to meet his vegan dietary needs. It identifies the 1999 target as Michigan State University’s biotechnology offices. Historical support material used Mason’s former name; the profile retains his current name and pronouns. This identifies historical custody and conditions, not a new continuous imprisonment interval.
