Biography

Marion Alston was a Boston mother arrested on July 20, 1969 after protesting officers' treatment of people listening to music on her front porch. Bob Jackson's account in The Black Panther alleges racial abuse, twisting her arm, forcing her into a police wagon and using mace. She was taken to police station 3, charged with drunkenness and disturbing the peace, and transferred to the city jail women's house of detention. The report says her husband arrived around 2:15a.m. and they were home on bail by 2:45a.m. The newspaper contests the drunkenness allegation and describes denial of a telephone call and further mistreatment. This was brief actual custody; no verdict or precise duration is established.
