Biography

Mario Buzzi was an Italian anti-fascist associated with Carlo Tresca’s newspaper Il Martello. He was arrested on May 29, 1927, for addressing an open-air meeting in Hoboken, New Jersey, and held for three days before being arraigned and released. That confinement provided an alibi when he was accused of involvement in the Memorial Day killings that led to the Greco–Carrillo prosecution. Police arrested him again during the July 11 raids on anti-fascist newspaper offices. He was held incommunicado in Port Chester and, according to contemporary accounts, beaten and pressured to accuse other anti-fascists. International Labor Defense lawyers secured his release on bail.
