Biography
Marguerite Tjader Harris was a writer, editor and peace activist who founded the leftist arts magazine Direction. As a leader of the Civil Defense Protest Committee, she was among the demonstrators arrested in New York City’s City Hall Park on April 28, 1961 for refusing to take shelter during the compulsory civil-defense drill. The reviewed sources establish the arrest but do not identify her among the defendants known to have chosen or received jail sentences, so no period of confinement is entered.
