Biography

Marc Cullen was a University of Maryland student arrested after an antiwar rally on May 10, 1972. Campus police dragged and beat him after alleging that he body-blocked an officer. A first trial ended with a hung jury; a second jury convicted him and the judge imposed a one-year jail term, then suspended it after requiring Cullen to write a statement admitting guilt and expressing regret.

Sentence, suspension and charge clarified

The June 13–July 11, 1973 contemporary follow-up clipping expressly dates Cullen’s one-year sentence and $300 fine to May 1, following a second-trial conviction for assault and battery. It reports that he then submitted a written admission and expression of regret to obtain suspension of the jail term. That post-conviction statement is not treated as a new guilty plea. The preceding May 15–June 12 issue, printed page 12, reports the initial sentence and appeal plans, and has an individually captioned arrest photograph.

Both reports date the police encounter and arrest to May 10, 1972. The later report says he had not attended the earlier antiwar rally and was walking to class when police confronted him; the earlier article describes the arrest as after a peaceful rally. The existing biography’s wording “during” the rally has therefore been changed to “after.” Neither source establishes an actual prison admission or physical-release day. The suspended year and the fine are not converted into time served.

The article and individually captioned photograph describe police dragging and beating Cullen during the May 10, 1972 campus incident. It reports a first mistrial, later assault conviction and sentencing scheduled for April 17, 1973; medical consequences are attributed to the report. The future hearing is not proof that sentencing or imprisonment had already occurred, and the later independently documented suspended term remains distinct from actual custody.
