Biography

Mamie Allen was an Unemployment Council participant arrested during the police raid on a relief delegation at Pittsburgh’s Locust Street Welfare Station. Page 3’s August 7 dispatch says twelve police seized Arthur Chisolm and Mamie Allen after the orderly delegation entered through a back door; Joe Romango was seized shortly afterward on the street. Workers marched to Mayor McNair’s office and secured release of the three on recognizance on Friday, August 3. A hearing was set but no charges had been filed. The enlarged report confirms Romango’s given name Joe. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1934/v11-n189-aug-08-1934-DW-LOC.pdf

Contemporary original newspaper source; individual page evidence retained in review audit 489. Exact individual custody dates and duration are not inferred from relative dates or collective claims.

The August 9 Pittsburgh dispatch published August 10 names Mamie Allen, Arthur Chisholm and Joe Romano as the three Locust Street welfare-station demonstrators arrested Friday and released Saturday with a reprimand after courtroom protests. City, group and event align with the existing Chisolm/Romango report, but its Friday-to-Saturday sequence conflicts with the August 8 report’s Friday, August 3 recognizance release. The spelling and chronology differences are preserved; no new profile, second case, replacement release day or numerical duration is invented.
