Biography

Maggie Morgan was one of three people the Daily Worker, page 3, identifies as arrested and still jailed after resistance to the eviction of Maggie Morgan, a Black widow, in Columbus. Its January 20 Columbus, Ohio dispatch says sheriff’s deputies removed her furniture on Wednesday, workers returned it, and police arrested Morgan, David Jackson and Charles Hendrix. Wednesday corresponds to January 16, 1935. The article’s concluding appeal confusingly prints Columbus, Georgia; the principal dateline explicitly says Ohio. No charges, sentence, release or duration is supplied. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1935/v12-n018-Nat-jan-21-1935-DW-LOC.pdf

A Columbus report described Mrs. Morgan as a widow whose threatened eviction from Stambaugh Avenue prompted organized resistance and prosecutions. It announced a March 4 trial for her and two other defendants, without establishing additional actual confinement.
