Biography

Marshall describes Johnson as a Galena lawyer arrested while defending a murder case on August 28, 1862. He was confined at Fort Lafayette and Fort Delaware, repeatedly sought charges or trial, and refused an oath he believed would imply guilt. The account reports unconditional release in December 1862 after nearly four months. It reproduces a May 24, 1869 false-imprisonment judgment in which defendants admitted the arrest was wrongful and without cause. Source: John A.
