Biography

Luis Manuel Chavarría Galeano, known professionally as Luis Galeano, is a Nicaraguan journalist and director of the radio and internet program Café con Voz. He fled Nicaragua in December 2018 after police raided 100% Noticias and authorities sought his arrest. The Ortega-Murillo government later stripped him of Nicaraguan citizenship and confiscated his property because of his opposition journalism; Spain subsequently granted him citizenship. U.S. immigration authorities arrested Galeano in Orlando, Florida, on September 14, 2026 while he was working as a rideshare driver. He spent twelve days in immigration custody, including confinement at Krome North Service Processing Center, while press-freedom groups warned that deportation could expose him to renewed persecution in Nicaragua. He was released on a $10,000 bond on September 26. His asylum and removal proceedings remain pending, with the next preliminary hearing reported as scheduled for November 4, 2026.
