Biography
Louis Kogan was arrested while selling the Labor Defender at the March 6, 1930 Union Square unemployment demonstration in New York. The Daily Worker reported his release after five days on Welfare Island and alleged that police had beaten him.
The caption beside Kogan's portrait in the April 1930 Labor Defender, page 76, identifies him as the New York worker beaten and jailed for distributing and selling the magazine at the March 6 Union Square unemployment demonstration. It separately says Aaron Grosberg was also beaten, without establishing Grosberg's arrest.
Louis Kogan was arrested while selling the Labor Defender at the March 6, 1930 Union Square unemployment demonstration in New York. The Daily Worker reported his release after five days on Welfare Island and alleged that police had beaten him. The March 11 report explicitly states that Kogan had just been released after actually serving five days on Welfare Island. Physical admission and discharge dates remain unverified; neither endpoint is calculated from the five-day duration.
