Biography

Leroy Hutchinson was a California prisoner and prison activist whose placement in maximum-security segregation became the subject of a 1972 appellate ruling. After George Jackson’s death, Deuel Vocational Institution confined Hutchinson in K-Wing on August 22, 1971. Officials cited his militancy, organizing and criticism of the prison system. The Court of Appeal found no factual justification for continuing his segregation after the initial emergency and ordered his return to the general prison population.
