Biography

Lena Gautman was a New York fur worker imprisoned in the 1927 fur-strike prosecution. The May 16, 1928 Daily Worker reports that all the returning defendants had previously served nine days. Gautman had received thirty days for expressing disapproval of the judge’s decision and faced twenty-one more days. Following the Court of Appeals decision, she was among the workers who surrendered at Part I, Court of Special Sessions and were sent to Welfare Island on May 15, 1928. The earlier nine days and later remand are separate custody stages; the remaining punishment is not proof of completed service. Her full actual custody total and final release are unknown.
