Biography

Lee Mason was a Black Communist candidate for Congress on Chicago’s South Side and a speaker at an American Negro Labor Congress anti-lynching rally on June 14, 1930. The Daily Worker of September 8, pages 1, reports that police arrested and severely beat him at the rally, that he remained bedridden after the injuries, and that he died on Saturday, September 6. The newspaper attributes his death to the police beating and announces a mass funeral and protest. It does not establish a court finding, custodial sentence, exact discharge or death while still in police custody. Otto Hall’s article identifies Communist congressional candidate Lee Mason as murdered through Chicago police repression in 1930. This corroborates the existing arrest-and-beating account; it supplies no additional exact custody endpoint.
