Biography

L. Weiss was a Needle Trades Workers Industrial Union organizer arrested on a warrant during Philadelphia custom-tailor organizing in August 1934. The August 15 dispatch reports Magistrate Dougherty held Weiss for court under $600 bail for threatening violence after Weiss refused a peace bond. It says the rival Amalgamated Clothing Workers attorney sought the bond to remove Weiss from the strike. The announced Friday hearing was not a verdict. No exact arrest day, bail discharge or completed term is stated. The initial is retained; identity is not assumed with Jack Weiss, the knitgoods picket, or later Smith Act defendants.
