Biography
Kyke Hall was with unemployed miner Virgil Hutton on Christmas night 1931 as they distributed National Miners Union leaflets calling Harlan County miners to strike. Mine guards Owen Sizemore and Dixon confronted them after they left the Blue Diamond Coal Company camp at Chevrolet. Hutton said Sizemore pistol-whipped him and that he fired in self-defense. Hall was jailed and faced a murder accusation after Sizemore died.
The Daily Worker of December 30, 1931, page 3, calls this Hutton co-defendant Kyle Hall and reports that Hall and Hutton's father-in-law Farmer were out on $5,000 bond each after being held as alleged accomplices in the Owen Sizemore killing. The spelling Kyle is preserved as a source variant of the existing Kyke/Kyla identity; no separate profile is created. The report does not establish an exact release day or final outcome.
The December 28 Pineville dispatch published December 29 reports Hutton, printed Virgin Hutton, and Kyle Hall held without bond in the Owen Sizemore murder case. It describes Hutton’s injuries after a revolver beating and calls Hall an eighty-two-year-old bystander. The age and spellings are source claims, not a calculated birthdate or new people. Farmer, Hutton’s father-in-law, is reported bailed. This earlier report does not override later confirmation of Hutton’s bail by December 31 or Hall’s reported bail in the December 30 issue; exact physical discharge days remain unknown. The December 28, 1931 report explicitly says Kyla Hall was thrown into jail with NMU relief organizer Virgil Hutton after the Wallins Creek leafleting incident. The separately mentioned father-in-law who obtained $5,000 bail is unnamed. No exact arrest, individual charge, physical discharge or complete duration is supplied. The independent New Leader of January 2, 1932, page 7 names the two detained miners as Virgil Hutton and Kike Hall in its account of the Christmas-night shooting near Chevrolet and the distribution of January 1 strike leaflets. This corroborates the event and the Hall identity recorded under the Kyke, Kyla and Kyle spellings in Daily Worker reports. The New Leader calls the dead guard Virgil Sizemore while the Daily Worker names Owen Sizemore; that source discrepancy is preserved rather than changing the guard identification or inventing another case. The separate Kyla Hall profile is retained under review as a duplicate source record; its evidence is reproduced here. No exact release day, completed sentence or custody total is inferred.
