Biography
Kevin Benderman was a U.S. Army mechanic whose Iraq service and religious beliefs led him to seek conscientious-objector discharge. After the Army rejected his application, a July 28, 2005 court-martial convicted him of missing movement and acquitted him of desertion. He received a fifteen-month confinement sentence, reduction in rank, and a dishonorable discharge. Amnesty International adopted him as a prisoner of conscience and confirmed his release from Fort Lewis Military Corrections Facility on August 18, 2006, after more than twelve months in custody.
