Biography

Kenneth Rottger and his wife Lydia were arrested during an interracial National Hunger March support demonstration in Charlotte. The December 7, 1932 Daily Worker, in a dispatch dated December 6, names Lydia as the speaker and says Black demonstrators attempted to defend the pair after police charged with blackjacks. A preliminary hearing sustained inciting-to-riot and resisting-arrest charges, and each was held under $5,000 bail. The reported possible fifteen-year penalty is a statutory threat, not a sentence imposed. The account does not establish exact arrest or release days or total confinement.
