Biography

Kelly Postal was secretary-treasurer of Minneapolis Local 544-CIO. The union supported truck drivers and organized workers on federal relief projects. Alongside the federal Smith Act prosecution, Postal faced a separate Minnesota embezzlement case arising from the dispute over the union treasury after Local 544 joined the CIO. He was acquitted in the federal case. In the state case he received a five-year sentence and served nine months, according to the published historical account. On December 1, 1941, the jury acquitted him on both counts. No Smith Act prison sentence was imposed; any brief pretrial custody has not been quantified.
