Biography

Kathryn Johnson was a Black YWCA secretary who, according to Alice Evans’s first-person account, was arrested with Evans during Chicago’s August 1935 demonstration in defense of Ethiopia. Evans describes confinement at the Wabash Avenue police station and Johnson telling reporters that she had driven an ambulance during the war and opposed war. The article does not establish Johnson’s individual charge, exact admission and discharge times or a measured personal six-hour term; its crowded-cell description is retained as an attributed account.
