Biography
Junius "Boo Red" Underwood was a Black Panther Party member from Richmond, Virginia. Arrested at seventeen, he was given the maximum penalty — a five-year sentence — and sent to serve it in an adult institution, the Petersburg Federal Reformatory. His family, friends and comrades organized The Concerned Citizens for the Release of Junius Underwood to fight for his freedom. The Black Panther of February 2, 1974 reported conspiracy to transport stolen goods in interstate commerce and transportation of stolen goods; the final disposition and actual release remain unverified.
The Black Panther of February 2, 1974 reported that Underwood and four other young Black men were indicted in May 1971 for conspiracy to transport stolen goods in interstate commerce and transportation of such goods. It named federal judge Albert V. Bryan Jr. and alleged errors in the jury instructions and presentence report, and failure to investigate whether he should benefit from the Youth Corrections Act. The final disposition and actual release remain unverified.
