Biography
Julius Hollis was a Pennsylvania miner and National Miners Union striker prosecuted after the Pittsburgh-district coal strike of 1931. In a contemporary letter, Mary Rasefske listed him among the strikers sentenced to the Allegheny County Workhouse at Blawnox. His sentence was one year and eight months.
Labor Defender, October 1932 (PDF page 21): The Blawnox roster places Hollis among strike prisoners currently confined under a nominal twenty-month sentence. Its account of half-hour screened monthly visits, censored correspondence and refusal of books concerns the prisoner group; no new individual arrest or discharge date is supplied. The November 24, 1931 report individually lists this National Miners Union strike prisoner at Allegheny County Workhouse, Blawnox. The roster establishes actual confinement during the mine-strike repression. It does not supply an individual statutory count, exact initial arrest, physical release or completed custody duration.
