Biography
Julian Crofton was a conscientious objector from New Jersey imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Douglas. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: born in London, England; Bruno Grunzig reported “he is an Englishman without papers hence illegally drafted. He is now in the guard house at Fort Riley, Kansas for refusing service. Will be tried shortly. Writes me that he shall refuse all prison labor regardless of the consequences. …
1920s custody review: The Swarthmore/Yoder conscientious-objector entry labels May 1918 as Date Drafted, not incarceration. That unsupported custody start is removed. Its notes separately date the Fort Riley court-martial and sentence August 23, 1918 (trial 119860, RG153 box5938). The guardhouse detention and June 20 second hearing at Leavenworth do not establish first admission to the prison term. The inherited 1920 release year is not supplied by this source and remains unverified pending the original discharge record. No identifiable photograph located.
