Juan Marí Brás was a Puerto Rican independence and socialist leader. A contemporary El Mundo report in 1979 states that he completed one month in the State Penitentiary for contempt involving federal Judge Juan R. Torruella. Police guard reports independently describe him in a cell at the State Penitentiary in Río Piedras. El Mundo’s report stamped November 4, 1979 expressly says he completed one month of imprisonment and had already been released. This is an actual reported month, not a nominal sentence converted to days. Guard memoranda dated November 8 describe undated shifts observing him in the State Penitentiary at Río Piedras; the memo date is not treated as the date of the shift or a new imprisonment. Exact admission and discharge dates remain unknown.
A September 24, 1979 police memorandum records Marí Brás’s arrest at Isla Verde airport and admission to the State Penitentiary that afternoon. A separate October 22 report describes his physical departure shortly after midnight. A 1979 interview also recalls two months in La Princesa prison in 1950.
