Biography

Joyce Katzberg and Christin Schmidt were arrested during the April 15, 1983 Tax Day anti-nuclear action at Electric Boat, Quonset Point. Both withheld their names, were actually jailed over the weekend, and were physically released Monday April 18 after identifying themselves. Obstruction charges were dropped; disorderly-conduct proceedings were still pending. The newsletter affirms that they remained in jail to talk with and listen to other prisoners; it records their actual Monday release, not a longer continuous stay.

Source and limits

The Nuclear Resister No.17, June 6, 1983, original page 5.

Individually named actual political custody is established. Forecasts, nominal sentences, court credits and physical jail service are distinguished. Missing endpoints, vital dates and demographic attributes remain unfilled; no present custody state is inferred from a historical report.

Additional original custody evidence

The October 18 Trident II sentencing report names Joyce Katzberg as taken into custody when she insisted on remaining in the courtroom during the supporters’ contempt proceedings. Unlike the five contempt defendants, the judge had not seen her turn her back and threatened an investigation instead. The article does not establish her formal charge, multiday imprisonment or release. No ten-day sentence, new completed jail total or other person’s outcome is assigned to Katzberg.
