Biography
Joyce Bailey was a Fort Deposit civil rights protester detained at Hayneville. She survived the attack following the group's release.
In her 1994 memoir in The Witness, fellow detainee Gloria House Manana identified Joyce Bailey as one of three women confined together during the 1965 Lowndes County civil-rights arrests. She described their cell as unsanitary, with a blocked toilet and a faucet that did not work, and recalled prisoners singing freedom songs together across the segregated cell areas. This retrospective account supplements the contemporary detention record without changing its dates or duration.
