Biography
Joseph Swilp was a 25-year-old financial secretary of the United Anthracite Miners of Pennsylvania local at Number 20 Tunnel of the Glen Alden Coal Company. The Daily Worker of March 2, 1935, page 4, individually names him among seven miners arrested in an alleged dynamiting plot during the anthracite strike. All were placed under $10,000 bail each and pleaded not guilty at their hearing. The paper characterized the case as a company frame-up and reported detention and torture at Wyoming Barracks. Some of the seven had been released on bail by the report, but it does not identify which men or give exact custody dates. The article specifically says Swilp signed a prepared confession after three hours of beating and torture, and quotes a fellow detainee describing the assault.
