Biography
Jose Santiago was a Puerto Rican independence activist, former Communist and leader of the Provisional Organizing Committee to Reconstitute a Marxist-Leninist Party. Immigration authorities sought to deport his Canadian-born wife Jo Ann after she refused questions about political associations. Canada would admit her but not Santiago and their children, so Cuba granted the family political asylum. The United States allowed Jo Ann to leave for Cuba with her family in 1960. The reviewed record establishes political exile but does not establish that Jose Santiago was arrested or confined.
