Biography
Jose Maria Gastelum-Quinones was a Mexican-born Los Angeles worker who had lived in the United States since 1921. Immigration authorities arrested him for deportation in 1956 based on alleged Communist Party membership from 1948 or 1949 through 1950. After years of litigation, the Supreme Court ruled on June 17, 1963 that the deportation order was not supported by substantial evidence. The reviewed records do not establish how long immigration authorities held him after the 1956 arrest.
