Biography

John Victor Chambers was a Vietnam Veterans Against the War member from St. Petersburg, Florida, jailed twice in Tallahassee in 1972 for refusing to answer federal grand jury questions about convention protests. A July detention preceded renewed physical incarceration on August 9. The four witnesses actually obtained release on recognizance bonds in September; the precise discharge day is not established. On September 25 the Fifth Circuit vacated their contempt orders and reversed for further proceedings because the government had not adequately answered the claim of unlawful surveillance of counsel.
