Biography

John Vanover was a worker whom a June 19, 1929 Macon dispatch identified as a victim of peonage on W. L. Arnold’s plantation. The report describes forced confinement since December 1928 and a federal prosecution of Arnold for holding and whipping workers. Vanover had complained to U.S. Attorney A. F. Smith about a severe whipping and a threat of death if he disclosed it; scars remained visible. The precise location of the plantation, physical release and complete period of confinement are not supplied.
