Biography

John Sutko was an unemployed Philadelphia father whose seven children were tear-gassed when police tried to evict the family. The Daily Worker of November 8, 1934 names him or her among three people arrested as police attacked a meeting protesting the gassing of Sutko’s children. It also reports an earlier arrest of Bismark following the eviction attempt. The exact arrest dates and releases are unresolved.

The Daily Worker, November15,1934, page5, “Eviction Fight Leader Gets 5-Day Term,” Philadelphia November14 dispatch: John Sutko was charged with attempting to kill a constable during the eviction struggle. A defense conference was held on Monday, corresponding to November12; workers immediately raised a $600 bail bond for his release. The report separately affirms his wife was released on bail. Funds raised for his release are not by themselves assigned an exact physical discharge day.
