John Sinclair
Biography
John Sinclair was a Michigan-based poet, music organizer, and radical activist who fused counterculture politics with music, managing MC5 and co-founding the White Panther Party in declared solidarity with Black liberation politics. He became a prominent voice for marijuana legalization and broader anti-authoritarian politics, helping inspire recurring public mobilizations around drug-law reform.
His most famous prosecution began with a 1967 undercover investigation that led to his conviction for possession of two marijuana cigarettes; in 1969 he was sentenced to 9½–10 years in prison. His imprisonment sparked a national campaign and the 1971 John Sinclair Freedom Rally at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, where John Lennon and Yoko Ono performed. Sinclair was released in December 1971 after serving about 29 months, following a change in Michigan’s marijuana penalties, and his conviction was later overturned by the state supreme court. In the early 1970s he also faced federal conspiracy charges tied to the bombing of a Central Intelligence Agency office; that prosecution was ultimately dismissed after litigation over warrantless domestic surveillance.
A prison letter published in The Movement in November 1969 was written while John Sinclair was confined at Jackson. An editorial postscript confirms that he was transferred to Marquette Maximum Security Prison two weeks after writing it, and that the Michigan Supreme Court denied his request for bail. The source gives no exact transfer date. Sinclair also recalled his separate 1966 confinement in the House of Correction for marijuana possession.
In his November 1969 letter, Sinclair said a corrections official opposed placing him in Jackson’s general population because he might organize prisoners.
