Biography

John Mack, a militant member of the Mechanics Educational Society of America, was expelled bodily from a local meeting and turned over to police during the tool-and-die strike in Detroit in April 1934. A. B. Magil reports this in describing Matthew Smith’s campaign to expel Communists. The article gives no exact arrest day, judicial charge, prison sentence or physical release. John Anderson’s suspension in the same article is a separate union-disciplinary event and is not treated as an arrest. Page 3's MESA report recalls Matthew Smith's campaign to expel Communists and John Mack being forcibly removed from a local meeting and turned over to police. It calls for his reinstatement, while reporting John Anderson's union suspension separately. Reinstatement demanded does not prove release; this corroborates the existing Detroit episode without supplying new judicial charges or exact endpoints.
