Biography
The May 25 Raleigh dispatch reports a Black condemned prisoner whose execution was reprieved for thirty days only hours before the scheduled killing after protests, including a Charlotte delegation with his mother. July 6 is printed as the new prospective execution date. The issue does not specify the underlying charge, initial admission, an actual July execution or completed custody duration. Page 2's May 16 Charlotte report identifies Edwards as nineteen and condemned for the March 11, 1933 killing of a white streetcar motorman. It says he was among seventy Black youths seized in a dragnet, initially released, rearrested and given a year on a chain gang for stealing cigarettes, then again accused in the unsolved murder. The ILD alleged a frame-up. The announced May 18 execution and refusal to recommend clemency are prospective, not death or completed custody; the later reprieve remains preserved.
