Biography
John H. Reagan was the Confederate Postmaster General. Captured with Jefferson Davis's fleeing party in Georgia in May 1865, he was imprisoned as a state prisoner at Fort Warren for some months. He later returned to public life as a U.S. congressman and senator from Texas.
Stephens records permission to visit Reagan for one hour daily on August 14, 1865, and removal of Reagan’s close-confinement lock August 25. Both remained prisoners; their October 13 departure is separately recorded. Stephens, Recollections (1910), printed pp. 457–458,485–486,532.
