Biography
Lester Carter names John Gleason of Georgia among the white train witnesses confined in Scottsboro during the initial 1931 prosecution of nine Black youths. He recalls authorities questioning the witnesses, placing them in the jail run-around and then locking them inside a steel cage for the night, with continued detention the following day. Ruby Bates’s parallel account also names John Gleason as one of the boys transported to Scottsboro. No individual statutory charge, sentence, exact release or full duration is supplied. The qualified name distinguishes him from unrelated Gleason prisoners. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/labordefender/1933/v09n11-dec-1933-lab-def.pdf#page=19
