Biography

John Dean, Communist Party organizer in Reading, Pennsylvania, was arrested February 22, 1936 while picketing the F. W. Grand Five and Ten Cent Store against an insulting blackface display. A February 23 dispatch in the February 24 Daily Worker says Socialist Alderman Mchosky sentenced him to eleven days in jail for disorderly conduct, described by Sergeant Schaeffer as picketing. Dean protested the racial insult and interference with equal-rights protests. Protests overcame an attempt to bar his telegram. No release date or actual served duration is supplied.
