Biography

John Daly Burk was an Irish-born playwright, historian, and editor of New York’s Time Piece. Federal authorities arrested him in July 1798 for allegedly seditious and libelous statements about President John Adams. Aaron Burr and other New York Republicans posted bail. Burk later negotiated dismissal of the case in exchange for leaving the country, but instead lived in hiding in Petersburg, Virginia, until Thomas Jefferson became president.
