Biography
John Anderson was the Communist candidate for governor of Michigan in 1934. The Daily Worker, August 20, 1934, page 3 reported that police watched his Detroit home, arrested him, took him to the station and released him without explanation. The Detroit arrest is distinct from the North Carolina textile organizer John L. Anderson. The exact detention day and duration are not supplied.
The October 18 Detroit dispatch on page 1 reports police arrested the Communist gubernatorial candidate yesterday afternoon, October 17, at Willis and John Streets. He was held for investigation and reportedly turned over to federal immigration authorities. ILD attorney Tucker presented citizenship papers; immigration officials denied holding him, yet the report says he remained unreleased. Willis and John are street names, not additional prisoners. This is a separate October detention from the previously documented August incident; no release date or measured duration is established. The October 26, 1934 Daily Worker, page 3, identifies the Michigan gubernatorial candidate as a Glasgow-born 1901 tool-and-die worker who moved to Detroit in 1923, led the Ternstedt strike committee, and fought his suspension from MESA Local 7. The portrait is explicitly captioned John Anderson. A Greenville worker's letter on page 6 reports understanding that Anderson had been arrested and held before the election; this is attributed correspondence and does not securely establish another distinct arrest beyond existing police detention coverage. No exact new date or case is invented.
