Biography
Joel Barr was an American electrical engineer associated with Julius Rosenberg’s wartime intelligence network. Barr was working in Europe when David Greenglass was arrested in 1950. Fearing that the investigation would reach him, he fled Paris for Czechoslovakia and later moved to the Soviet Union under the name Joseph Berg. Declassified Venona material identified him with Soviet intelligence activity; Barr denied spying and said that his close political and personal association with Rosenberg drove his flight. In the Soviet Union he became an important engineer in the development of the country’s microelectronics industry.
