Biography

Joe Dallett was arrested on August 12, 1930 for speaking at a factory-gate meeting outside the Western Electric plant in Cicero, Illinois. The Daily Worker of August 19, page 2, prints his name as Joe Dallett and reports $500 property bail secured by the International Labor Defense. Its wording does not clearly establish the day of physical release, and it gives no formal charge, verdict or prison sentence. The December 16, 1932 Warren, Ohio relief-delegation report identifies the steel organizer printed Dallet leading demands over water relief and describes police threatening arrest. The continuation includes the young worker John Gates among the delegation. A threat is not actual detention; no new case or prison duration is added. Page 3’s August 2 Pittsburgh bulletin reports that Joseph Dallet, Youngstown president of the Steel and Metal Workers Industrial Union local, was arrested here that day at an antiwar meeting. It separately mentions eight unnamed delegates arrested in Ambridge the previous night. The steel organizer’s locality and surname align with this existing Joe Dallett record; the printed Joseph Dallet form is preserved without merging unrelated people or assigning the eight arrests to him. Page 3's Republic Steel report says Dallet was arrested August 1 and held two days after exposing the union's agreement with the company. The report concerns the established steel organizer, but differs from the August 4 issue's August 2 Pittsburgh antiwar-arrest chronology. The explicit two-day report is preserved without silently changing dates or assuming the stories prove two distinct admissions.
