Biography

Joe Chandler was a speaker for the Metal Workers Industrial League at McKeesport on September 1, 1930. The Daily Worker of September 8, page 2, in a Pittsburgh dispatch dated September 7, reports police breaking up a demonstration of 3,000 people and arresting Chandler, Roth and Mikades. Each received a $50 fine or fifty days in jail. The source does not say whether this defendant paid the fine or actually served the alternative jail term and gives no physical discharge date. The March 12, 1932 chronology dates the arrest of national NMU youth organizer Joe Chandler with Allan Johnson at Middlesboro to March 5; the March 11 dispatch places Chandler among the five jailed strike supporters. The September 28, 1931 Young Worker, printed page 5, captions Joe Chandler as Pittsburgh district organizer of the Young Communist League speaking at William Simons funeral, corroborating the youth-organizing and miners-defense role behind the existing McKeesport record. The April 15 Knoxville dispatch printed April 18 individually reports Joe Chandler released on bond from Pineville that day. This is a separate Kentucky prosecution from his September 1930 McKeesport arrest.
