Biography

Jimmy Jones was a United Rubber Workers of America strike leader arrested under Ohio’s riot law after the May 19–20, 1936 Goodyear sit-down strike in Akron. The July 12 dispatch says he was the first of thirty-one unionists to face trial. After forty-three witnesses and twelve hours of deliberation, the jury split six to six and was dismissed; the state planned another trial. Prosecutors alleged that strikers held supervisors and obstructed police. Jones acknowledged directing the strike but said his efforts prevented violence. This profile is distinct from the Gulf War resister of the same printed name and from Alabama prisoner James Jones. No acquittal, exact arrest day, subsequent retrial outcome or measured custody total is inferred.
