Biography

Jerry Africa was a MOVE member imprisoned in Pennsylvania during the organization’s 1977–1978 confrontation with Philadelphia authorities. MOVE’s retrospective booklet describes an original November 5, 1976 courtroom clash, subsequent proceedings before Judge Paul Ribner, trial in absentia and state-prison punishment at Graterford. It identifies Robert, Conrad and Jerry as political prisoners whose release MOVE demanded during the prolonged standoff, and explicitly reports their release on May 8, 1978 under the negotiated settlement. The exact state-prison admission day and nominal sentence are unreported; the November 1976 arrest and later state-prison confinement are not assumed to form one uninterrupted interval. The same account separately names him among the nine Rochester arrestees on May 13, 1981, followed by extradition to Philadelphia on disputed fugitive warrants; the endpoint of that later custody is not supplied.
