Biography

Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederate States of America. Captured in Georgia on May 10, 1865, he was held as a state prisoner at Fortress Monroe in Virginia — for a time in shackles — and indicted for treason. He was never tried; released on bail in May 1867, and the charges were dropped in 1869.
